ABOUT US
My name is Sophia Pirgents and along with my husband Konstantinos Melas have started breeding Newfoundland kennel since 2011.
My love for the breed however has started long before.
The first time I saw the breed was in a morphology exhibition which took place in Greece in 1995 and I acquired my first Newfie in the year 2000 who’s name was Ouda from the Greek word ‘arkOuda’ meaning bear.

Bred for: Newfies were bred as working dogs. They used to pull tree trunks and fisherman’s nets. In the olden days (and until today) they were used as lifeguards. No-one can doubt their abilities. Just by looking at them once, they make you want to add them as a member of your family and as part of your life. The Newfoundland is often referred to as a ‘gentle giant’, they are not aggressive even though they have been bred to be muscular. They use this strength to assist people.
Common Questions
How do they deal with heat? Is it a dog fit for warmer climates?
Their water resistant double coat does not only protect them from the cold (freezing water) but also from heat. Which is why their hair is never cut, only groomed. The dog needs to be treated as we would treat ourselves during a heat wave and protected from the sun. A water dog like the Newfie is ideal for a country like Greece which has endless beaches.
How much do they shed?
Brushing the dog for five minutes daily is enough to ensure that the hair and skin of the dog are in good condition. Grooming does not only help to remove dead hair but also dust from the skin. However the breed does shed once or twice a year for 10 to 15 days when this happens you need to spend more time grooming it. You do not have to look at this only as a responsibility; it is a good way to bond with your dog while you groom him.
Do I need to live in a house with a big garden in order to have a newfie?
Every dog is happy to be with their master, meaning even in a small apartment the dog would be happy. In addition to that, the dog needs to be able to stretch its’ legs once in a while to spend some energy, and depending on the breed you have are also different energy levels. Newfoundland’s are low energy dogs and do not need extensive daily exercising. We often take the dogs to the beach so they can do what they do best: swim!
